Another amazing Jean Harlow portrayal, she was such a gem. Incredible to think she was only 21! Younger than me but she feels so mature. Same with Mary Astor, she’s 26 but I felt she was older because she looks exactly the same in The Maltese falcon and that’s like 10 years latter, she doesn’t age!
Here the best couple was clearly Clark Gable and Jean but he and Mary Astor had amazing chemistry too. I just hated the parts where they said and implied that Mary Astor’s character was more worthy of respect/love than Jean’s because she was a “lady”. But yeah all a product of its time, same with the character Hoy, I never understood how making such blatant racist jokes was even considered funny, it’s just the basest level of an attempt at humor.
Anyways, Jean is fantastic and Clark Gable never looked dreamier (yes I prefer him without the mustache). Oh and the husband character was great! He really embodied the wholesome masculinity type when he said he wanted to talk about feelings with another man. I really liked the ending, very satisfying.
