literally every review mentions suspira at some point, and unfortunately for me i haven’t seen other films so i went into this quite blindly
for what it is, terror (1978) is a fun horror experience, if you couldn’t tell this film had like a budget of a nickel, but it embraces its limitations with its enthusiastic cast and campy inventive effects. it has a gritty, untouched plus unpolished feel, really adding to its charm and appeal. the visuals are surprisingly good for such a low budget, the garish colours give this an eery atmosphere and it’s genuinely creepy in some scenes. this is also heavily ahead of its time, with one of the earliest forms of meta or ‘movie in a movie’ trope, really paving way for the slasher craze in the 80s. it has some fount footage esque scenes which is crazy considering this film was released in 1978. the premise is actually one i really enjoyed, a group of filmmakers see a screening of a witch’s curse, only for the curse to effect them and kill them all off, as it claims its victims.
the kills are memorable - the kills are over the top, gruesome, grisly which is quite rare to see in supernatural spirit type of horrors, so i was very glad it has a little gore. death sequences include levitating cars, impaling on spikes and decapitation by glass. while there’s plenty of good ; there’s also a little bit of bad to balance things out.. and one major issue is the narrative. which to be honest, there isn’t much of. characters kinda appear, and then just die. it feels really messy as the scenes just feel plunged together. the acting is uneven, and the characters are surface level and underdeveloped.
there’s no real standout performance, and i just don’t care about anyone in this film, due to a lack of development. they built to such a nice plot, but once the murders begin it kinda just loses all of that. it does from a slow supernatural ride to then a bunch of deaths stringed together. the british accents and slang definitely put a smile on my face, i just love how they used to talk lol, but while its fun, unfortunately some amateurish execution makes a lot of aspects of this film fall flat. this is a cheesy, low budget british indie horror film clearly inspired by the giallo genre and it has plenty of visual flair. it’s definitely not great. it feels a little awkward at points but this is really fun.
