“Never fear! Doc Savage is here!”
So get this, his name is Clark and he has a fortress of solitude in the arctic. No I’m not on about the man of steel but the man of bronze who came first. Savage debuted a whole five years before Superman yet I hadn’t noticed the similarities between the two until this watch.
Doc Savage: Man Of Bronze is a silly film that I could happily watch over and over again and never get bored. It perfectly encapsulates the spirit of the original pulp comics with the characters being extremely accurate and the tone being light and family friendly. The humour is ridiculous but funny and the villains are so dastardly and over the top but both of these elements work so well.
There are some great little things such as the letters USA in the name of John Philip Sousa being red white and blue which made me chuckle. I also appreciated the fact that noted horror actor Michael Berryman got a normal, non monstrous role. He’s a great actor who due to his appearance ended up typecast in horror roles for many years.
It’s an absolute shame that they tease a sequel at the end yet it never materialised as the characters had and still have so much potential.
