You know it’s probably not a good sign when even the director came out and said he thinks this movie is mediocre. I don’t necessarily disagree with him, but I also wouldn’t go so far as to say the whole movie is mediocre. It has its moments of charm and the movie looks and feels exactly how I want my classic westerns to look and feel
I think where this movie’s mediocrity comes out is its story and characters. I’m just starting to make my way through all the Ranown Westerns, but even just comparing this to The Tall T (the only other one I’ve seen at this point), and the issues became so apparent.
These movies are super low budget and take place in a handful of sets. The Tall T has the majority of the story confined to just a few places, so it uses the characters all being confined together as a chance to develop them all. This movie does not do that. The main character’s motivation is clear but kind of stupid? The majority of the plot is incredibly static. No one changes. There are so many instances of scene after scene after scene of characters going through their established motivation over and over and over again ad nauseam. There are plenty of movies I love that take place in just a few places or heck even just one room, but you can’t confine a bunch of characters and have them have the exact same conversations in each scene. It gets boring.
This is a 30 minute tv episode stretched across 80 minutes. I will still revisit this one day, but only because I have a soft spot for Westerns.
