This kind of movie bothers me. It doesn’t know how to pick a lane and it doesn’t know how to use skillful juxtaposition. Sure, it has one of the most disturbing scenes of violence I can recall seeing in some time. However, over a third of this movie is annoyingly silly. It doesn’t amplify our character because he remains a goof to the very end. Even after experiencing presumably the most traumatic things imaginable, he’s still a bumbling fool. There is no arc. There is no lesson. Everything we’re rooting for within him is manufactured. A convenient moment of triumph to evaporate before our eyes within seconds.
