This was not the first Shaw bros movie I saw, but it was the one that convinced me I needed to see a bunch of them. After seeing about 20 or so,(so not nearly enough!) I can say with confidence that this is one of the best. While I can’t say definitively that it’s the best one (that is probably eight diagram pole fighter), it does kind of feel like the definitive Shaw brothers experience. While no movie can single handedly represent the entirety of such a huge history of film, this movie feels like a real sampler.
You get the venom mob, you get one of the biggest directors with Chang Cheh, you get incredible martial arts, a wild concept, some of the gore, great acrobatics and weaponry, excellent training sequences (though they maybe go on a little longer than necessary, I mean did we need to see the deaf guy punch the vase three separate times?).
Just an incredible time.
