Why? Just Why.
So this is technically, the only (other) official follow up to The Wizard of Oz with the license to the 1939 movie (I’m still trying to figure out if Journey Back to Oz counts). Even if it’s a sequel to a Tom & Jerry insertion half assed version of The Wizard of Oz. This does feel more like a sequel to the original and not the Tom & Jerry. Like the writers just wanted to write a sequel to the Wizard of Oz movie but only could do it if they made it a sequel to the Tom & Jerry one.
The most interesting part about this movie is that PASEK AND PAUL, just about to win their first Oscar for songwriting La La Land the same year, wrote the original songs for this!. WHY?. Was this the price of the deal with the devil they made to get an EGOT quickly. But they still feel the need to force in reprises from the original. However they do manage to bring in a deleted song from the original film which was nice.
We open with a montage of events from the original (Tom & Jerry in The Wizard of Oz) because children could not possibly remember what happened in one of the most famous movies of all time. Is having Tom & Jerry running around while the original happened in the background not enough?.
But it’s still better than that one. Tom & Jerry are more involved directly in Dorothy and CO’s mission even if they do nothing. And less Tuffy, she only shows up in the last 25 minutes. I would have preferred none of her since I depise her and her insertion into these movies
