There’s an inability to comment meaningfully on a story that revolves around racism when you don’t experience it. However, the character’s narrative is clearly traumatic and unnecessary in comparison to her counterparts, whilst poorly written and therefore poorly acted. There are kinder ways to educate privileged children on discrimination, and to be made simply for that purpose seems exploitative. Although it draws attention to important messages, it also uses white saviours repeatedly and is littered with stereotypes. The ending in particular serves no purpose other than lazily providing an unrealistic happy ending. This had potential, but there really is no need to make every black female character’s race central to her personality and story, especially when only partially explored.
