I quite enjoyed this despite the overwhelmingly bad reviews. I think there’s a pretty strong dissonance that the film sets up using extreme silence and extreme stasis with a film starring Tye Sheridan and Jeff Goldblum. But it works beautifully. Unnerving, meditative, and wonderfully indulgent. The compositions (replete with borderline obsessive framing symmetry) and the lighting are immaculate in every shot and the acting (even when people complain that there isn’t much acting going on) is spectacular. It’s beautifully atmospheric and subtly terrifying. Rick Alverson knows what he wants and doesn’t give a good flying fuck if you like it or not. Even though I loved this entire thing, it’s worth watching alone for Denis Lavant.
