It's pretty ridiculous to see a French movie which is also supposedly an erotic thriller with Isabelle Huppert who can make a Haneke film feels erotic and sensual but can't make this movie neither erotic nor sensual. Fancy hotels, beuatiful landscapes of France, theaters and expensive clothes don't anything for the atmosphere of the movie. Emotionless frames that don't have anything to tell or to show within themselves, long tracking shots and close-ups mean nothing and leave erotism and sensuality entirely up to verbal narrative and charisma of Isabelle Huppert and Gaspard Ulliel.
Erotism and sensuality (which should be the main aspects of the movie) are holding onto the charisma of the leading actors. Mostly sensuality of the movie belongs to Isabelle Huppert who without even getting naked makes this terrible melodrama at least a bit erotic. But not a single film can be at least good just because of the charisma of one actress, the reason why this particular film fails in anything it tries to do and to be is the director, Benoît Jacquot. I don't know for what he was going while adapting and shoting this but it's not an erotic thriller, it's at best a very mediocre melodrama about a playwriter and a hooker made for TV with one of the best actors of France that somehow made it to the theaters.
