A halfway decent B-movie from the late 50s that could’ve easily been much better, had the plot developed a bit more throughout the film.
As always, it’s a pleasure to see Lon Chaney Jr. and to see the way they used effects in the film. As I mentioned, the film could’ve been much better if the plot had developed more, as barely anything truly happens throughout the film. Lon Chaney has some good freak-outs, like the plane scene, but the other characters don’t do too much.
Revisiting the effects, compared to other films of the time, the effects are laughably bad. The cyclops looks pretty goofy and the enlarged animals don’t look too pretty either. The looking through the eye of the Cyclops actually doesn’t look too bad, but it doesn’t make up for the lackluster effects ever present throughout the rest of the film.
I really enjoy these campy B-movies of the 50s and 60s, but this one kind of missed the mark. There are enjoyable moments and the short run time makes it bearable, but there are glaring issues that could’ve easily been fixed. Overall, an okay film that I probably won’t revisit.
