On the one hand, this barely rises above the novelty of a bunch of Hollywood hipsters mugging it up on a realization of gen-x semi-ironic love of Ed Wood. Much of the formal play feels dated or pointless, the soundtrack is annoying, and you only get very brief scenes with every character.
On the other hand, the idea of watching this were it directed by Ed Wood gives me a sinking feeling in my stomach. The amount of sweat that goes into making this enjoyable is staggering. You get the bad bones of the script poking through, so you can see what this was meant to be. It’s clearly not a parody, rather some affected affection. A lesser attempt at this would be insufferable, so I have to respect and recommend it.
