It’s very fun and kind of batshit, but it never goes too far into real insanity like The Pirate or An American in Paris. I actually think that the farce is possibly the most uninteresting part of it, which the movie also does because once it’s over the main couple doesn’t even talk about it. Minelli’s colors really stand out here, particularly in the two (2) musical sequences that actually exist in this musical. That’s insane to me, and basically disqualifies this film as a musical for me. That said, I find that as a whole it works and is very fun and funny too. And, hot take, Fred Astaire doesn’t have half of Gene Kelly’s charm. Just saying.
