Judy Garland is so good and funny and beautiful in this, but that’s hardly a credit to the film itself. It was just a given that Judy lit up every frame she was in and Presenting Lily Mars leans on her gifts pretty heavily.
The movie as a whole is fine, I guess. The first half is a lot of fun, but the latter half falls off pretty aggressively. The songs aren’t very good and happen so infrequently that the story doesn’t register as a musical, making the sequences feel jarring.
This came out at the height of Judy’s power and given how weak it is compared to everything else she was doing at the time, I understand why it gets lost in the shuffle.
