This is an odd little film. Burgess Meredith was certainly miscast and I didn't really enjoy Merle Oberon either. Melyvn Douglas's character was the most likeable but even then wasn't super interesting. I liked Eve Arden and the lawyer but they were not major players. I think the film as a whole could have been more effective if the pianist was played by someone else, and Merle Oberon would have played off of him better.

Like there's certainly a lot to like and I was amused a fair amount of the time, but it never really coheres together very well and kinda just goes nowhere.

I know a lot of people aren’t fans but I really enjoyed this. Yeah it’s not as electrically compiled, naughty, or laugh out loud funny as other Lubitsch, but I found it super charming.

The one thing I did find hilarious was the satire of ultra-nihilism filtered through a pretentious pianist. Far from my favorite of his work, but if I’m ever doing a Lubitsch retrospective I will not be upset about taking another look at this.
