This peaks very early with the fantasy fruit orchestra and the mesmerizing “La Conga” sequence, though that last one is a bit uncomfortable to sit through because you can see in those kids’ eyes how much speed they’re on. Blink twice (or at all) if you need saving, Judy!!
I really like the idea for this film and the glimpse into 1940s pop culture it provides. Mickey Rooney is at his most likable here and really in his element as an earnest but clueless pint-sized bandleader.
But the pacing is honestly atrocious and drags the whole movie down. It’s wild that they could pad this thing with the most inane subplots like the melodrama with Mickey’s mama but couldn’t find more for post-Wizard of Oz Judy Garland to do.
