This is very much a space oddity.
Whilst From The Earth To The Moon is a hidden gem of a HBO series, it’s very strange. I love the space program and I love that this series tackles the subject from almost every angle but some of the episodes really aren’t it and they really vary in quality. The Apollo 13 episode tells a purely fictional story set against the backdrop of the very real space mission which is a really bizarre take that’s really only held together by the incredible Lane Smith.
However there are creative choices that do work. The Apollo 7 episode which is told as a pre flight documentary really works as does the Apollo 16 episode which centres on the astronauts wives club.
Whilst the series is a mixed bag at times, the good far outweighs the bad as the format allows stories to be told that really wouldn’t be told elsewhere.
