Watching a film where Shah Rukh Khan has a minor role may be alien to modern viewers, but there was a time when that was not the case. Deewana is one such film where Shah Rukh is only there for the last hour.
Deewana is about Kajol (Divya Bharti), who falls madly in love with a singer named Ravi (Rishi Kapoor), but Kajol's evil uncle (Amrish Puri) and her cousin (Mohnish Behl) are furious over the fact that they are further down the inheritance due to Kajol and Ravi's marriage.
It's a good masala story, and it is progressive for its time. Raj Kanwar's film has no problem with talking about widows and their desires. How life continues even after a husband's death. Even though it can seem that Kajol has no agency in the film, it is still better than what we used to get in the 90s.
There are some memorable songs, like the hauntingly beautiful Deewangi and Amrish Puri gives a memorable villainous turn, while Shah Rukh Khan gives an amazing first impression. The film does seem long, and it is, but it could've benefited from some cuts, as there is a lot of filler material.
