J. Cole: 4 Your Eyez Only

10/10 Documentary. I thought I would watch this doc for Cole’s final album the Fall Off and BHM. And 4 Your Eyezs Only is one of my favorite albums ever from one of my favorite artists ever. These days docs feel very scripted in my opinion. When you sit someone down these days it feels like they’re only trying to get the narrative the producers want. I love how none of these convos were planned in this and they all felt so real. Because they were all real convos. And I love how they incorporated tracks from the album into this doc as-well. I also loved his chat with his dad and his dad’s friend about Jonesboro’s black history. My favorite parts from this doc was Cole talking to Mike Brown’s cousin and him talking to a random woman outside a random place. Mike Brown was killed by a police officer and we get to learn a lot about the man from Coles convo with his cousin which was awesome to listen to 2 intelligent men speak. Then Cole at the end of the doc talks to a mom who has lost 2 kids in the most tragic ways possible. And she still seems like the happiest woman ever while dealing with grief and 3 jobs to provide for her family. The convo was so damn powerful and I actually felt something from it because it was REAL. Man Cole has had one of the greatest careers in Hip-Hop ever as he is in my eyes one of the goats and I want to thank him for his career and pieces of art like this documentary. Also man the Fall Off was such a great album.

With The Fall Off announced yesterday, I had to watch this and see the album in another light. J. Cole is a generational artist and a genuinely thoughtful human being.

This is my personal favorite Cole album. Not his loudest, not his most accessible, but easily his most beautiful and complete story.
