Daddy

I'm sorry but Zindagi Meri Dance Dance is an absolute underrated banger. Similar to Miss Lovely, Ashim Ahluwalia and his team have somehow miraculously captured the intricacies of 70s and 80s Mumbai; without having to resort bombastic CGI to boost realism. In my view, this element significantly contributes to the film.

Thematically, DADDY setups up Arjun Rampal's Arun Gawli as an empathic character who was backed into a corner and forced to rival corrupt cops and other gangsters. The film's portrayal of Gawli's desire and hunger for power is incredibly one-dimensional; without truly explaining the transition to white hat Gandhism after the race-relation riots in 93' Bombay. Unfortunately, it's a very mixed bag for me.

I was so looking forward to watching this Narcos-styled desi political drama but man did it backfire. Arjun Rampal as Arun Gawli was probably the sole good thing holding down the fort because everything else seemed to be in shambles. 

There is a sense of noir filmmaking with gruesome scenes - there's blood, there's gore, but it couldn't redeem the chronological mess caused portraying Gawli's story. It felt like something you would expect in a whole season of Narcos about the whole origins story of a gangster, but here it was stuffed in just over two hours, and so script just couldn't hold up. 

Still has some decent shots, but maybe just watch it for Arjun Rampal.
