This is my first Mizoguchi film.
From what I understand his work is often focusing in on class, status, humanism and suffering. I think this was a good starting point, I don’t think I’d fully appreciate his more acclaimed work if I started with them. For what it is, it’s definitely competent. the story feels small but compact as it tells a pretty depressing story about class and societal structures. I read a review comparing it to Stagecoach by John Ford, I kinda get it.. but at the same time I think it helps that this isn’t as grand and massive in terms of scale. It benefits from being more grounded than Stagecoach.
Overall,
Great entry point, definitely feel the age of it, but still an interesting movie. Can’t wait to watch more Mizoguchi movies.
