for all its disquieting tonal ambivalence, my biggest gripe is that it doesn’t take its premise far enough. this was my first film by takahashi and co., and i’m curious to see what he can do when working within more defined genre boundaries. as a brisk, occasionally dryly funny mood piece, there’s still quite a bit to admire, even if it never quite fully lands.
