This feels like essential viewing. Mainstream films have consistently misrepresented and made caricatures of transwomen sex workers, especially transwomen of color. This documentary, while not perfect, actually seeks to represent these women with dignity instead of mockery. The Salt Mines is snapshot in time of a Latine community of trans sex workers and their friends and partners, living in and around salt mines in Manhattan. It’s one of those few pieces documenting authentic trans life that has thankfully survived all of these decades.
While I am bummed that the subtitles seem to have clear gaps, I do think the documentary that we get still has a decent amount of these women’s perspectives. I only wish I got to hear everything they had to say, and I can tell there are some pieces missing in this translation.
