i dont ask for realism in movies. all i ask for is substance and compelling storytelling. once again i find mani ratnam plays with interesting ideas that just float around wanting to fall in to place but get lost in random clutter. 

the motivations and decisions characters make are always surface level and left without in depth exploration mainly because they are never given the chance to.

nevertheless, madhavan and shalini are a dream and ar rahman has a field day in one of his most compelling albums ever. wanted to love this more.

enjoyable, but quite a few annoying tropes in the movie that sorta just make you roll your eyes. also Aravind Swamy and Kushboo are so random, what was even the point.

I remember the exact day I watched this movie. It was the FIRST day of the pandemic and my mom made it her mission to show me all of these old tamil movies. Regardless Alaipayuthey was the perfect start to this list. One of my favorite Mani Ratnam movies. 4/5.
