Really really enjoyed this. Scarygirl has been a series thats been on my radar for over a decade now but i've never bit the bullet and actually interacted with any of it. This Aussie film actually came out last year in non North American English speaking countries so this is a really bizarre release. Almost exactly one year after we finally and bafflingly get Scarygirl in a wide-ish theatrical release.
The animation of this movie fulfills the promise of the nighties to early 2000's cgi of Veggietales and PC FMV cutscenes. A sleek slightly plastic look to the film and animation so on point you can easily confuse it for stop-motion at first glance. Everything at once seemed to go for the Pixar look and more recently the pseudo 2D look that I have come to really not like. So in alot of ways watching this diorama look is a cinematic dream of mine come true.
While it technically got beaten to the punch by Uglydolls(2019) to be the first of the designer style collectables/cartoons/comics from the 2000's to get a full fledged film. Scarygirl feels like a much more authentic love letter to that style. Which I am filled to the brim with nostalgia for.
It has been sanitized a bit for the 2024 kids. We're not letting anymore Invader Zims into the world through traditional media(Amazing Digital Circus is the biggest kids thing since Pokemon with only three episodes btw). Scarygirl has taken her ozempic for her big screen debut. And admittedly the plot is probably a bit too barebones for its own good. Still seeing this world of vinyl figures in motion rocks. Certain characters can feel one note but always charming and fun to look at.
One of my favorite children's movies in a long time and I can finally beat the hating non anime allegations.
I picked this over going to see Terrifier 3 and I don't regret it at all.
I really hope people see this one in a similar light as The Book of Life in the years to come.

Great animation. Bad writing.
I like this movie despite of that though. I feel it has a really nice message about disability and not having to change yourself to be perfect. That’s a good thing to have a kid’s film be about.
