I think this was a student film, although I’m not sure. I actually found it at a thrift store on a BD-R and thought I would give it a shot. The credits confirm that it was shot locally in the STL area which was my next question.
The plot is quite interesting for 2014. It seems very revenant to what is happening today. Manda is trans or at least is questioning their gender (we see a shot of them putting on a binder). It’s clear that they are not out to their family as the mother brings in a new dress so they can wear to the school dance.
Manda gets ready to go out (not in the dress) and then leaves. We don’t see what happens until they come back into the room and is upset. In a flashback, we see that they were more or less hooking up with a girl and the girl is disgusted when she discovered that Manda has a binder on. It seems like she did not know Manda was trans. Once Manda comes home, they grab the dress and destroy it.
Overall a good little short with a great performance by Jackie Kelly as Manda.
