theres some scenes in this and in the book that hit a little too close to home and i dont really fuck with that, hence why im dreading finishing this book for my swedish class. also cause the book is boring as hell like how am i halfway through and a whole bunch of nothing has happened..??
film though? its a pretty realistic and sad portrayal of how a lot of people in the working classes live and i think many who are immigrants, or are children to immigrants, can see themselves in at least something going on in this film. as someone with a pretty absent mother i found myself mostly affected by the scenes showing leena in the present. the way she kinda hits a full circle moment at the end made me pretty stressed. the amount of regret she shows also has me second guessing if no contact really is whats right but i guess time will tell with that. most likely ill find myself hitting a leena moment or whatever youd call it and i dont feel the energy to muster an opinion on that right now.
some other things that have me thinking a lot is leenas father. hes trying to do whats best for his family by bringing materialistic things because of obvious reasons, but does that work when hes emotionally not there because of his drinking? age old question that still seeks answers. id answer it myself but i have too much to say on that topic. critical thinking will probably have you leaning towards the obvious answer — no.
the gem with many swedish films for me though is that they feel really authentic and i dont know if its cause i AM swedish or because theyre just built different. id like to say both i think.
also, where is markku? they forgot she has another brother? i guess its easier to make a film without the baby so fine i guess. what about riita? all the other thousands of characters they introduce in this slow book? they miss so many scenes that couldve been good but decide to include åses weird horny stepfather..?? like oh okay.
theres a dude deadass named ”sten hård” (rock hard) in this though which i thought was funny so thats notable.
