Simply perfect for International Women’s Day and one of the very few instant favorites I’ve had recently.
Pia Frankenberg perfectly captures the essence of girlhood and the meaning of true female companionship – the existential desire to share fears, to be vulnerable, and to receive unconditional support from other women in a world full of turmoil.
Nie Wieder Schlafen deals with serious topics with a great deal of irony, spontaneity, and comedy. In fact, It was a bit scary how accurate it felt despite the distance of time and place, because I have definitely gone epitaph-reading in cemeteries with my girlfriends (we didn't steal a kid's gravestone, though).
Besides that, it’s a perfect addition to the “city as a character” canon. The portrait of freshly unified Berlin is a particularly unique feature of the film.
