the ending still had me C R Y I N G. the fight between the two Cassandra’s was beautifully shot, and the joining of the two in the end was sure something. i think the film perfectly captured the mother daughter relationship, and gives the perfect feeling i think every daughter has when she looks back at a fight with her mum and realises her mum really was just doing and trying her best.
the flashback with Cassandra and her mum talking over Cassandra’s published piece and her mum says “i don’t think browns your colour” and she just looks like she wants to face plant on the floor was VERY relatable. We’ve all had a moment where we put our foot in our mouths, but i think those of us who are mothers probably experience it a bit more, knowing the weight of a mothers words.
i found Cassandra very frustrating at times. she seemed wilfully selfish and not wanting to understand her mum. but then turns around and obviously does understand her mum to a painful degree (the fear of “what if that happens to me?!”)
it took me a minute to fully understand the two actors playing one character at the same time but once it fell into place the story flowed easily.
don’t watch if you love your mum, but also it’s a must watch if you love your mum. it will make you sad, to think “what if it mum is Elaine?” as in what if my mum dies and what if she dies…unhappy? unfulfilled? with regrets? with goals unmet and unattempted?
