And now with the movies I have yet to see. And after a slew of movies with no consistent director, Ataru Oikawa returns with a prequel to his movie. Was it something we asked for? Not exactly, but then again isn’t that the case with most prequels?
This is definitely one of the mid entries, but honestly it’s not too bad. Oikawa certainly brings a different style. While the first Tomie played out like a slowburn drama with some horror elements, this… how the hell do I even begin to describe this? It’s bizarre! And not the way I expected it to be! There’s a scene of men masking themselves up to kill Tomie and the way they are dressed and act, seems like a bad Power Rangers ripoff! And another scene where Tomie is mentally torturing some and it sounds like early 2000s rap is playing in the background! Never thought I’d hear that in one of these movies! Man, I miss Robbie’s Song.
But he does some things well. There’s a great shot where Tomie is sitting next to a character facing opposite directions, leaning in and it looks like what we see in certain photos of her we see in here. Wonderful framing! Currently the backdrop I chose to show you all reading what I’m talking about. And there’s a scene in here involving bandages that, not going to lie, is actually kind of creepy!
Well this series seems up and down, but hoping for some good ones again real soon!
