Overlong but preposterously entertaining, “Project Gutenberg” is a solid crime thriller featuring Chow Yun-fat’s best performance in years. Without delving into the plot too much, it’s basically about a forger named Lee Man(Aaron Kwok doing his finicky act) who falls in with a counterfeit ring led by The Painter(Chow Yun-fat) and has to survive long enough to finish a forgery. Imagine a Dan Brown novel but with that HK-style action we all love and that should give you an idea of what a good time this movie is. As mentioned before, Chow really is the best thing about this movie. His ability to be completely commanding and in control one second, then suddenly swing into possessive volatility the next second is remarkable. I’m sure there are other actors who can play this role, but Chow is one of the few actors on the planet who — even in his 60s — can still command the boyishness necessary to really sell his character’s disturbing sense of entitlement. In other words, even in this day and age Chow Yun-fat can still remind everyone of why he is a flat-out star.
