As many have mentioned, there are populist concessions made in the plot, but they still managed to get away with a fuck-ton. Perhaps the most damning moment is when rival drug dealer Zhang Changlin tells our hero Cheng Yong that the one disease that will never be cured is poverty, implying that nobody in China is doing shit about it. Best thing about it is the fact that most of this movie refuses to be Oscar bait but is instead just a fantastic crime film. Also, how many times has director Wen Muye watched “The Chaser” because this screams Na Hong-jin. Oh well, if you are going to make a crime film, you learn from the best.
