Going high on this one.
It begins with a recently unemployed cellist and makes the effort to address unemployment and job "theft" by the end. There is a surprising amount of forethought to make this a recurring theme. It explores the idea that a man from the mountains could steal a job. To further have him return to a hermetic life because of the damage he did is self-reflective and morally nuanced.
The whole film carries an underlying concentration on the marginalized, almost entirely taking place in bars and alleys. There is a heavy emphasis on alcohol including a line along the lines of "stray cats and stray humans can't survive without booze." Instead of this being a happy film, it's rather a film about trying to be happy in a hopeless world. Channeling an atmosphere akin to a Ghibli film, this uses wonder and magic to seamlessly offset the obviousness of its subject matter.
Very memorable.
