“Jesus! Nobody talks like that”
Trouble Bound has, admittedly, idiot cornball dialogue, but it’s either so earnestly written or affably performed that it is a joy to watch. Madsen was born to deliver this kind of noirish pastiche tough guy talk, Arquette takes an archetype and spins it with a type-a attitude, and the host of character actors here are game enough to chew the hell out of the scenery. Combine that with the super-saturated vhs noir aesthetic, some nice comedic timing, and gonzo love for the genre, Trouble Bound makes for fun hokey road trip pulp that’s weird enough to make its klunkyness worth it.
