In the spirit of the easy-going flow of the Beach Boys California sound that the documentary touts itself to be about, Echo In The Canyon goes with the flow, choosing to talk about the Byrds and the Beach Boys and play songs from each rather than delve into any sort of intriguing question or shed any new insight into the subject for it's brief 90 minute run.
For those out there that already have an endearing love and knowledge of albums like "Pet Sounds" and "Turn! Turn! Turn!" and this kind of music in general, the best thing this documentary can do is reaffirm those beliefs and help you dust off those old classic rock playlists long-buried on your Spotify and jam out. But for others, me especially, it does little beyond that, leaving those more musically uneducated to wonder if Bob Dylan's deadpan son knew this wasn't a music video for him and his friends.
I'm giving this an extra half-star just out of the pure joy and passion from these interviews, and in case my classic rock illiteracy is to blame for a lot of my gripes.
I'm indifferent at best.
