a surprising sov horror-thriller with an intriguingly executed premise. very unusual and different approach to sov, with shots that replicate a refreshing blockbuster flick but filmed with a camcorder. some uses of a bright light with the neon color spectrum shine a scene into a living dead trance with slight resemblance to scenes in barry jenkins’ 2016 moonlight.
from scene to scene, it’s surprising to see how some sequences are well vibrant to indicate fever dreams even though there are poorly lit sequences at times.
very ugly shots of skin bubbling up from underneath and light gore of body parts exploding help induce the gritty nature of the film. ozone takes an odd existentialist approach to drug addicting fever dreams, with how the human race is more evolved when connected to this masochist superpower.
in terms of sov films, this is certainly a masterpiece, one of the more well made sov films i’ve seen. i love its direction and boldness to be alike films with professional theatrics while still maintaining that unique and absurd screenplay that only low budget films can execute.
