Idk where this came from, but if you worship at the altar of Ninja Scroll as I do, this is a surprisingly amazing find from 2000! The art is phenomenal, evoking the 90’s style perfectly with sharp, bold shadowing and hyper stylized violence. The thing is only 42 minutes; it’s slim and tight. The exposition almost entirely lies in heinously tragic backstories, super dark and disturbing. Otherwise, it’s all action! This is the kind of anime to get your inner high schooler’s blood pumping. Admittedly, there is an undeniable misogynistic blemish to this film. I think it falls in the vein of Ninja Scroll, so do with that as you will. I thought Rangiku had a meaningful redemption that ended up being tragically nuanced. That’s not to say this movie is anywhere close to being profound, but it consistently opted for darker choices.
