I don't know if I'm supposed to be excited for Austin that he's living his dreams by spouting false platitudes and taking selfies for hormonal preteens, or horrified that these self-centered, fame-obsessed teenagers are who kids strive to be like. Either way, the documentary appropriately frames its subject as compassionate and uplifting while at the same time not hiding the weird and unsettling undertones of this whole culture. I've seen a lot of people referencing Bo Burnham's Eighth Grade when discussing this film and there is a weird tonal connection between the two.
