There is not a single doubt in my mind that Hu Bo would have lived to be the greatest filmmaker of his generation.
Not as good as his other 2 pieces of work, but still leagues better than any other student film I’ve ever seen.

I think the real reason I’m rating this lower than Bo’s other 2 films is because I feel it didn’t leave me stunned like the others. An Elephant Sitting Still is so beautiful and melancholy every second and left me speechless after the credits rolled. The Man in the Well was so unexpectedly raw and unnerving (manly because of that god tier sound design) that I was too left speechless. This film didn’t have the same effect on me as the other two. But I understand this was his first film and not everything can have the same level of weight.
Loved that bit with the lobster tho 🦞
