I think it’s safe to say that after watching this, the best forms of Halo content is just when it’s Spartans with badass armor and badass weapons fighting the Convenant. Because the best ones of this whole film of shorts follows that principle.
I’m basing my rating by rating all the shorts individually from 1-5 out of 5 and then dividing it by 7 when finished. So in the end it’s a 3.7 but I decided to round to a 3.5 because that feels more correct than a 4/5. I think the best ones are Odd One Out and The Package, but all reviews I’ve seen have the shorts in different spots which I actually really cool because with 7 shorts, obviously people with have their favorites and least favorites. Speaking of least favorites, Origins I and II was a horrible way to open the film, I hated it and it was a waste of 20 minutes.
The animation, while it jumped around in multiple directions, actually looked really nice…minus the Origins animation that shit was like a slideshow animation. I really liked Odd One Out animation, it reminded me of One Piece and DBZ while my other favorite, The Package, reminded me of The Clone Wars. The other animation was alright, the ones I haven’t mentioned all felt the same or at least similar except for The Duel’s animation, that one was actually quite nice so I’d rank that animation style probably just below Odd One Out’s and The Package’s.
I’m not the biggest Halo guy, and I’m also one of the only people to have enjoyed Halo Infinite but this series also felt special to me in a way for some reason, I don’t know what it is. Seeing Master Chief at any moment was a joy in this film, whether that be because of all the memes centered around the guy or just the fact he’s the biggest badass of all badasses.
I feel like companies have a really hard time making Halo films, because other Halo films are garbage from what I’ve seen and known but I feel like it’s a really simple concept, no? Large man in green soldier armor takes on hostile alien race head on with the tools at his disposal. I feel like I could do a film about Halo properly if I really committed. I’ve heard mixed feelings about the TV show, so because I haven’t seen it I can’t really say an opinion on that. Maybe the show actually did the IP justice and followed the simple principles for why the series is so loved.
Live, laugh, love…the voice acting. Other than the animation, the voice acting was done real nice and it felt legitimate, not just some voice acting done by an animation within the studio.
