i really wanted to like this film, i really did. with a talented cast and a defined look to every scene, this film has a lot going for it. but, as the film moves its way to the finish line, i couldn't help but feel like there was something missing. there was an "airiness" to this film that felt deliberate, like it was really trying to show the audience that they were saying something poignant, but instead what i felt was an emptiness that didn't match up to the film's visuals. the movie felt like a wonderful and beautiful picture frame that was polished, levelled, and hung up, only for everybody to look up and realize there's no picture inside. hiding behind window dressing and vague, lofty japanese/english dialogue is a film that lacks both heart and soul. listen to the universe ends up profiling as a film that constantly tries to convince the viewer by screaming out "hey! something important is being said!" but i'm just not buying it.
