Santa’s Little Helpers (2019) Review
A VERY LOUD CHRISTMAS
This is my twentieth Christmas project of this month, and I’m counting my run with this Minions Christmas animated short, “Santa’s Little Helpers” (2019). To be honest, I didn’t expect much, and well... I didn’t get much. What I ended up watching was a loud, chaotic, and, frankly, forgettable holiday special that left me more frustrated than festive. While there might be one or two redeeming qualities keeping this from being a total waste of time, it’s hard to ignore just how annoying and formulaic it all felt. It honestly wasn’t even a good way to kill time during the holiday season. If anything, it’s a reminder of how much Minions content can quickly become overstretched and lose its charm.
The most glaring issue here is, unsurprisingly, the Minions themselves. I know they’re supposed to be these lovable little troublemakers, but I didn’t enjoy how they came off in this short at all. Their usual slapstick humor and relentless gags, which were maybe cute the first couple of times, now just feel like noise. It felt like the whole short was a one-note joke of constant mayhem and chaos. I hated when the Minions were screaming at each other in their signature gibberish, flailing around like hyperactive toddlers in an endless loop of mishaps. It’s as if the creators thought that the louder and more frenetic they made the Minions, the funnier it would be. But instead, it just became grating. I was cringing at some of the over-the-top antics that, instead of adding charm, only served to remind me how tiring their brand of humour is when there’s no real point or story to back it up. And the plot? It’s so thin it practically evaporates. The Minions are trying to help Santa get ready for Christmas, but there’s no real tension, no stakes, and absolutely no emotional investment. I didn’t enjoy how the plot was just an endless series of slapstick moments where the Minions create disaster after disaster—there’s no real sense of progression or development. I hated when they kept bouncing from one chaotic situation to another, just filling time with ridiculous gags that didn’t add anything of substance. Sure, there’s a general “help Santa” framework, but it never actually feels like the Minions are accomplishing anything meaningful. Instead, the short feels like it’s just dragging on to fill up its runtime with empty noise.
Now, I’ll admit, there is one little moment that almost made me reconsider my negative take. I loved when, after all the chaos and confusion, the Minions actually managed to get Santa’s sleigh back on track. It was such a small, almost subtle moment in the grand scheme of the short, but it actually brought a smile to my face. It was cool when, after everything falling apart, the Minions did something right for a change—however briefly. It gave me a slight feeling of holiday magic, even though it didn’t last long enough to redeem the rest of the special. But, honestly, that was about it for the positives. That one brief moment of warmth was like a breath of fresh air, but it wasn’t enough to make up for the rest of the experience.
What I really hated was how Santa’s Little Helpers missed so many opportunities to build up a real holiday spirit. Christmas is all about warmth, generosity, and that special kind of magic that makes you feel connected to others, and this short just completely glosses over that. It’s as if the filmmakers were more interested in shoving the Minions brand into the holiday season than actually creating a fun, meaningful Christmas experience. I hated how the visuals, though bright and colorful, didn’t do anything to enhance the sense of Christmas. There’s no real effort put into making the setting feel festive or magical. Instead, the focus is almost entirely on the Minions’ antics, which get old fast. The animation, while technically fine, doesn’t bring anything new to the table. Everything feels generic, as though it was rushed through production just to capitalise on the holiday season. And it’s not like I’m completely against the Minions doing a holiday special, but if you’re going to make one, at least give it some heart. Sadly, “Santa’s Little Helpers” doesn’t deliver on that front. It doesn’t offer any real holiday cheer, and it doesn’t even try to add any fresh twists to the Minions formula. It’s a loud, chaotic mess with a generic Christmas backdrop, and that’s about it. There’s no depth to the story or characters, and as much as the Minions try to get into the Christmas spirit, they fail to actually embody the kind of warmth or magic that the holiday represents. It just felt hollow.
Overall, “Santa’s Little Helpers” is a bad Christmas animated short. It is not something I’ll be revisiting anytime soon. The short feels like a missed opportunity, a cash-in on the holiday season that doesn’t offer anything beyond the usual Minions antics, which were already growing tired years ago. It’s not even close to being a “holiday classic” and is, honestly, a special I’d forget about the moment I move on to the next Christmas project. It might have a small moment or two that could make you crack a smile, but that’s not enough to save this from being an overwhelmingly tedious watch. I didn’t enjoy this short to say the least… hoping to forget about it quickly.
