This is one of the cringiest things I’ve ever watched on Netflix. I put it on looking forward to maybe something about the history of anime or it’s influence on popular art, and instead was treated to an hour long commercial for Netflix original programming interspersed with “wow aren’t the Japanese super weird?” Type takes. It has nothing interesting or insightful to say about the medium and just comes off as dismissive and weird about a whole country and the many intersecting cultures within it. I’ve seen Disney documentaries from the 30s that had more educational value and less racist Orientalism.

The worst movie I have ever watched. The only reason I saw this was because I was with friends who wanted to watch the lowest rated movie. It's not even funny, just horrible. Horrible editing, filmography, writing, pacing, and effects. funded by Netflix, this movie seems so cheap and careless. Also downright racist and insensitive at points. This type of movie is dangerous to the western view of Japanese culture, it paints them as one-sided nerds obsessed with anime and violence while also been cute and pornographic. By the end of the movie I had a headache and wanted to sleep. Just like shy girl.

The reason I’m giving it 2 1/2 stars is that it had a lot good quotables from directors. Other than that? It seemed grossly edited and too heavily stylized for me.

An extended Netflix commercial where Alex Burunova is sent on what appears to be an all-expenses-paid trip to Japan, to numerous anime studios just to go "JAPAN IS WEIRD, GUYS, RIGHT?" for 40 minutes, while the other 18 are a mix of just okay interviews and ads for Netflix anime series.
