Here’s a bullet point review/thoughts of the film:
1. Akshay Kumar sticks out like a sore thumb in the film. (This is about his acting performance. Like, he serves his purpose but… he’s just… meh)
2. Sara Ali Khan’s best performance. (Note, I’m saying it’s HER best performance.) You can tell she’s ‘acting’ but… after a while since her character is so spry and spitfire, you let that go.
3. Dhanush STEALS the mothertucking show.
4. A.R. Rahman’s music is great.
5. The second half is much better than the first half…
6. The film is ambitious, I’ll give it that.
7. The mental health aspect of the film… it kinda downplays everything to the simplest trivial sense. But I’m not complaining because Bollywood still has a long way to go for depicting better mental health well. This wasn’t an accurate representation (I think! Someone enlighten me!) so Bollywood needs to do better.
8. Chaka Chak is STUCK in my head.
9. The cinematography is good. The lighting and color, especially in the first 20 minutes of the film, is top notch. I love the use of the color yellow in the lighting.
10. The screenplay could have been better because most of the times the film struggles to find it’s footing and falls into many common traps.
11. So watching this on HULU in the US. And… um… why is there THAT ad in the middle (after interval)… what was the reason?!
12. I just realized… they’re supposed to be in medical school.. in a hostel… like?????
