I think Pinky exists in conflict with itself as a film. While I think this film wouldn't have been made without a white writer/director due to the fact that black people hardly got opportunities like that in the 40's, and especially not to make movies criticizing white people, Elia Kazan (while a fantastic writer/director in his own right) was not at all the right person to tell this story due to the fact that he is white and could never truly understand this kind of prejudice and life. The film is certainly a step in the right direction for race in hollywood, and I am glad it was made due to its influence in not only race in movies, but also in upholding the first amendment for movies, however, I do think you can tell it was written by a white man due to its undertones of pushing segregation despite condemning white racism. The directing is great, it has some amazing compositions and stagings for its scenes, but the writing could never truly tell the story in the way that it needed to be told. I suppose that is how it had to happen though, and because of that steps were made in the right direction. I don't know, I'm conflicted I suppose. A decent film nonetheless.
