2010This used to be a personal favorite of mine in the early 2010s. Going into this rewatch, I knew I wouldn’t like it as much as I used too. Even worse, I was fully aware that it’s a highly problematic and extremely offensive film, but holy shit, seeing is much worse than knowing.
It’s so highly and casually racist, misogynistic, classist, lowkey homophobic and painfully nonsensical film. And all of these things are played for laughs. When the films main antagonist - a cartoonishly devilish rich guy - treats his wife like absolute trash it’s bad, but it is funny when one of the ‘good guys’ makes a racist or sexist remark. It’s incredible that the film exists the way it does, because no ten minutes go by without one or multiple offensive remarks.
Also, the marriage/cheating storyline of the main characters parents is so fucking disgusting. The father cheats and the mother takes the son and leaves. At no point does anyone ask her how she feels. She’s treated like an annoyance, someone who ruined all their lives, and is ignored. When the father tries to win her back by obsessively calling her or trying to get the son mixed up in all of this, it’s played for laughs too. Also, at no point does he actually say that he’s sorry or that he regrets cheating or anything. SHE FUCKING APOLOGIZES AT THE END. And her only character trait is that she is a cook and the film repeatedly states that the only thing women understand is cooking.
On the other side, it’s an entertaining film in the way that you can’t believe what you’re seeing and hearing.
I’m definitely not surprised that I kinda hate this film now. Enes innocent tho!
