i adore slice of life films and cu li never cries paced it all so well. the b&w adds a different dimension to the already beautiful shots. it feels refreshing & nostalgic all at once especially exploring the theme of past & present. does a great job at exploring the dynamics of two families merging into one; yet placing the focus on ms. nguyen & the niece. i love the usage of symbolism with cu li and how it represents ms. nguyen’s happiness/company. this film reminded me of my grandma; her multiple doggys & cats all in my kampung since the 70s.

Van is a one-arm preschool dance teacher. She's getting a shotgun wedding to her unemployed boyfriend, who tries his best. Her depressed aunt's only friend is a slow loris named Cu Li.

It's a kinda-quirky, mostly sorrowful, slow-moving black-and-white slice-of-life film. It's kind of the Vietnamese version of Tu Dors Nicole, if that makes sense.

It's very much a festival film, but as far as those go, it was very nice. A cute watch; especially whenever the slow loris shows up.
