Giving Voice

There’s something about the American way and how things always seem to be spoken about in such grandiose terms, sometimes I love it and sometimes I hate it - this time felt more towards the latter. Not because August Wilson’s work isn’t spectacular. And not because these young aspiring students lives weren’t interesting. But somehow this documentary manage to give too little of both sides, and it just left me sort of not entertained.

Another addition to the collection of great docs released this year, this one telling the story of a high school theater competition named after August Wilson where a bunch of kids perform a monologue from one of his plays. It also is about how theater, and art in general, is something so valuable and can change many lives. It’s all about expressing yourself and finding yourself and this doc does a really great job of showcasing that, especially in teenagers. 

Very engaging and heartwarming. I’d say give it a watch when it comes out in Friday.
