Ponniyin Selvan: Part I is genuinely one of the best historical films I've ever seen. It has everything: brilliant characters, an interesting plot, gorgeous outfits and sets, and a banging soundtrack courtesy of A. R. Rahman. I'll admit, it does take a bit of brain power to remember all the names of the people and places introduced, but once that's out of the way PS-1 is excellently executed. I haven't read Kalki's novel, so I can't compare the accuracy of the film to its source material, but overall it's such an absorbing and visually stunning epic. If you're looking for period films from other countries or just in general, give this a go even if it's only to see the beautiful outfits and jewellery.
