Where to start with The Amazing Maurice (2022)…… What a magnificent film (amazing if I might say!) The colourful characters voiced by admirable actors, Emilia Clarke, David Tennant, Hugh Laurie, David Thewlis… The list goes on! Emilia Clarke in particular truly was compelling in her role, I felt her emotion and passion at every word… The soulful storytelling, the seamless animation, the joyous sense of humour, full of belly laughs! The shocking plotwists, one after one, truly shocking! And to top it off, the perfect ending, which left me truly satisfied…. Such an educational film too if you can believe it!
Don’t let my own cat know, who was sitting with me as I was watching this, but Maurice, you are my favourite kitty cat! 🐈

While largely inoffensive, this film fails to adequately adapt and translate Terry Prachett’s literary voice to screen. By keeping with a cg style that is not wholly its own and apes the work of other studios, The Amazing Maurice fails to capitalize on the fourth wall breaking and meta commentary it wants to do and dumbs down a lot of it for the sake of an audience much younger than that of one who would read the book being adapted. The concepts are too high-flung for a film that appears to want to skew younger and smaller. The animation itself, along with the cinematography, is adequate but still falls into the same problem of not being wholly appropriate for the story being told. Ironically enough, the 2d animated sequences that take their style from picture storybooks are what is most appropriate for the tone and are the best looking segments in the entire film.
